The Large Hadron Collider

September 22nd 2008 01:45
Large Hadron Collider

Those of you that are terrified that the Large Hadron Collider might create a black hole, sucking all of humanity into one-dimensional strands of matter spaghetti - feel temporarily relieved. The LHC is broken.

Them blokes at the BBC prefer to say it in their fancy book-learnin' way: "The Large Hadron Collider forced to halt"

They call it a quench, which isn't nearly as refreshing as quenching your thirst with Gatorade. From the article:

"The failure, known as a quench, caused around 100 of the LHC's super-cooled magnets to heat up by as much as 100C.

The fire brigade were called out after a tonne of liquid helium leaked into the tunnel at Cern, near Geneva. "

My immediate response was: just put ice on it. I remember once, I had a cousin that had a fever of over 100 degrees. His maw just put a bag of ice on his forehead and he was up and running around within no time.

But a tonne of helium? That's crazy! Where did it go?

Wikipedia tells me that Helium is the stuff that makes your voice sound high-pitched when you inhale it from a balloon, and that it can be dangerous to inhale.

"Inhaling helium can be dangerous if done to excess, since helium is a simple asphyxiant and so displaces oxygen needed for normal respiration.[2][91] Breathing pure helium continuously causes death by asphyxiation within minutes. "

These reckless scientists are thickheadedly ruining the sanctity of our wonderful world. This cloud of helium could suffocate over 100 people if left unchecked.

But the scientists don't care about that - preferring to concentrate on creating the black hole that will destroy the Earth.

I've said it many times before, but the government needs to crack down on these particle-smashing, stem-cell harvesting, GMO-creating mavericks.

Hey Cib,

HAHAHAHA! Funny read - they should put a whole lot of ice on it... permanently!

I for one am quite happy to hear it broke down - and I hope it keeps breaking down! These fools shouldn`t be able to go around 'trialling' these sorts of things whilst putting the rest of us at risk over it.

I have to agree, governments should be putting a stop to this!

I don't think they have enough ice, though.

Putting us at risk? What risk?

Damn.
Now we may never know if they can destroy the world.
