Ever wondered why men always seem to be keener on drug use than women do? A new study has found that amphetamines (also known as “speed”) have a greater effect on men than on women. Upon taking a small dose of the drug, male subjects exhibited higher doses of the pleasure-causing chemical dopamine in their brains than female subjects. Men experienced a better rush and more fidgetiness, though both sexes reported similar feelings of dizziness.
The fact that men and women think differently should come as no surprise. Male brains have been found to contain about 6.5 times the amount of intelligent grey matter as female brains do, while women have almost 10 times the amount of intelligent white matter when compared to men. Grey matter relates to information processing, and white matter relates to the connections between information processing areas. Though this difference does not give rise to a difference in overall intellect, it may be related to more specific differences in the abilities of men and women when it comes to subjects like mathematics and languages.
