Real life X-men

X-men 3: The Last Stand has taken box offices around the world by Storm. The movie explores a future where evolution has given birth to humans with special powers, through the mutation of an “X-gene”.
Well. While we haven’t quite yet reached the magical stage of X-men, there can be no doubt that the world has already witnessed some fascinatingly different human births and developments as it is.
Take, for example, Chuy, the wolf-boy. Chuy (real name Jesus Fajardo Aceves) was born with hypertrichosis, also dubbed The Werewolf Syndrome, to a family genetically prone to that usually rare condition. Anyone thinking: Hank McCoy?
The three-armed baby recently born in China makes stranger news still. The two-month-old baby was born with two left arms, both so unusually well-formed that they have doctors puzzling over which one to amputate. If only he could keep all three…the kid would be a ninja and a half!
And there’s more. About three years ago, an Indian baby was born with a four-inch tail. For his peculiarity, the baby was believed to be the reincarnation of the monkey-faced Hindu god Lord Hanuman.
Then there are those who are born both male and female. True hermaphrodites are said to have the gonad termed “ovotestes”, which contain both male and female sexual body parts. While this condition is rare, more than 400 cases have been reported worldwide.
Finally, there are the “mutations” that we have created through miracles of biotechnology. One such example is the robotic muscle suit named HAL, that grants its wearer super strength. The suit was put to use earlier this year, when it enabled two disabled Japanese to fulfil what was previously an impossible ambition: mountaineering in Switzerland.
We live in a strange, wonderful world...
