An interesting, but dangerous breakdown of data from Daniel Lemire's blog, Number of Scientific Papers by Country, showing which countries are producing the most research papers in recent years.
From the period 1996-2006, he quotes the following:

These numbers are over the entire 10-year period, but Daniel's contention is, if you look at last year, you'll see a big change in the rankings, most notably from China - but also from Canada.

I wonder: how do these stats tally up papers that have contributors from more than one country? By the first author? By the last author?
