Men no longer needed to create sperm
February 13th 2008 09:48
Somedays, I wonder if the only thing that I'm contributing to the human race is my uninspiring dribble of lethargic sperm.
And now, not even that is worth saving in jam jars (from: Portnoy's Complaint)
It seems, thanks to the hard-working bastards at the University of Newcastle, that a sperm cell can be created from an embryonic stem cell taken from a female.
Naturally, the embryonic stem cell is not an ideal donor, and the industry is quickly working to generate stem cells from adult cells. Sperm cells have been created from male bone marrow, and the researchers are trying to push it towards creating sperm from female bone marrow.
Go for it! Giving lesbian couples the ability to have children - it sounds amazing, but we're still a long way away.
The sperm cells are still 'no good' at making babies:
"There is some question about whether a sperm cell created from a female could produce viable, healthy offspring. The human female sperm cells could not in their current state produce offspring as they do not have the correct amount of genetic material. The team must next have the cells undergo meiosis to make sure the cells have the correct amount of genetic material."
