Mars Phoenix Lander find ICE!
June 25th 2008 11:09
NASA is thrilled to announce that the Phoenix Mars Lander has found water ice on Mars. The news comes after photos of the whitish substance under the Lander was found to sublimate over the period of four days.
It's great news for the Martians as it suggests that cocktails served on Mars are likely to be ice cold.
The debate may seem ridiculous to those of you that saw the early photos - 'Er ya, that's ice, all right!' you might have said.
NASA scientists are a little more skeptical - they've been tricked by white before, I suppose, and they weren't sure if it wasn't just some hard salt on the cold Martian caps.
Everyone's excited to see what's in the water - will it be frozen bacteria, leftover organic compounds, or even a frozen toe?

"The confirmation that water ice exists in the area directly surrounding the lander is big and good news for the Martian mission. NASA's stated goal for the Mars Phoenix was to find exactly this -- water ice -- and then analyze it. With the latest news, the first step is accomplished. All that's left now is to get the water into the Phoenix's instruments, a task which has occasionally proven more difficult than anticipated."
