making more Clone news.
April 5th 2006 05:21
Champion stallions aren’t the only clones making scientific news. Mule clones born in 2003 will soon be raced against non-cloned mules for the first time in clone history. The race will take place in June this year and will hopefully expose any differences in the health and vitality of cloned and non-cloned animals.
In Australia, treasurer Peter Costello has spoken out against the use of cloned embryos for stem cell research on ethical grounds. The Minister for Industry, Ian Macfarlane, has asked for a more “rational decision-making process”, echoing the democrats view that Australia’s regulations must change if we want to be a part of advances in biotechnology.

What's rational about growing plastic donkeys so you can race 'em against real ones? Careful wot you wish for Andres ..

this would be plain bad, in my opinion.
i do agree with andres though in that goverments should think of some way to allow research - within limitations.
about cloning race-animals - i think it's a fantastic idea! it takes the whole "naturally better" aspect out of the game, so the performance of individual animals is based solely on its training, its upbringing... and is a better reflection on the trainers.

I think that .. if racing horses comes down to all horses being equal, except through training then .. you've removed the horse from the race. Example; if I watched a car race where everyone was driving the same car, would I really care what the car was? Probably not.
If horse racing goes down this path, will anybody care that the machine being raced still breathes & eats & feels pain? Will it be cared for like a 'real' horse?
If you can churn 'em out like so many iPods, will anybody care?

one of my previous posts mentioned that stem cells may be found in testicles. i reckon alternatives like these - that don't involve embryos at all - are definitely the way to go. if possible.
sog - i don't think cloned horses will be treated any better or worse than non-clone horses are now. no matter how many clones there are, i think a basic understanding that horses are living, breathing, feeling creatures, will remain, because each horse will be nurtured differently and will behave differently to its cloned siblings. i don't think it is likely that clones will be treated identically - there are just too many variables in the world.
how do you feel about cloned livestock?

I don't know about the treament thing liz. I really think that once humans can replace something easily they lose the 'special' attachment to it. I'm trying to think of examples but I'm only coming up with crap. OH oh .. how about like 'RePet' in that Arnie movie 6th Day. Your pets dies, you just buy another .. who cares?
I'm thinking about the humanity that we lose when we 'discover' how something is done. When you learn how a magic trick works, when you learn the truth about Santa or the Easter Bunny .. am I making sense?
