Komodo dragons are cruel

June 17th 2008 08:38
Komodo dragon eating a buffalo
John Vidal, on the Guardian Wildlife site, wrote a terrifying article about Komodo dragons and how they get down with their dinner.

It's in response to the 'aww, how cute' crowd of animal lovers, who find all animals adorable.

Vidal was in Indonesia, and saw a few dragons sunning themselves lazily. He probably thought that they were freakishly beautiful, or that they were real badass looking lizards. Continuing on, he saw three different dragons that had taken down a buffalo and were eating it - alive:

"The first dragon had grabbed it by its testicles and was starting to chew its way into the body from below. The second dragon was slowly forcing the buffalo's head open and was going down its throat. The third was, as they say, going in the back door."

It could be random luck that the dragons managed to start eating the parts that give us the most shivers, but it seems diabolical, doesn't it? One dragon chewing on your jewels, another going for the excretory channel - just as you scream, a third dragon goes in after your tongue.

If only it could be over quickly...

"Every so often the buffalo shuddered and tried to rise. Was it really still alive? We watched from a few feet away, our guide armed only with a stick, transfixed and disgusted like us. Our stomachs heaved. The buffalo continued to twitch."

It took over a day for the Komodo dragons to finish their meal, and, apparently, the poor buffalo was twitching till the very end. How do they manage that? The dragons must have a surgical-like skill to avoid the really important bits...
