Hubble Space Telescope turns 16
April 26th 2006 12:11
The Hubble Space Telescope turned sweet 16 this Monday. To celebrate, its proud space agencies parents, NASA and ESA, are releasing a beautiful mosaic image of Messier 82, said to be the “sharpest wide-angle view ever obtained of M82, a galaxy remarkable for its webs of shredded clouds and flame-like plumes of glowing hydrogen blasting out from its central regions.”
Since it was launched into space on April 24, 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope has been used by at least 4,000 astronomers around the world, taking around 750,000 images of about 24,000 celestial objects. Measurements taken by the Hubble Space Telescope have contributed to more than 6,300 scientific papers.
Plans are currently underway to replace the Hubble Space Telescope with the larger, stronger James Webb Space Telescope in 2013.
