Daylight Saving Time – A Boon In A Bane

I never got to hear about Daylight Saving Time until I landed in Australia, and had been thinking that this was something that had been initiated in Australia all these days, for to the best of my knowledge, Australia being located in one part of the world that has ozone holes, which in fact, was not the fault of Australia. Moreover, Australians are more eco-friendly and many measures are being taken to make their country develop in a sustainable and environmental friendly way, and daylight savings is one such step taken forward. However, is still a debatable topic. This is when I have to know that there are many other countries that fall under this plan of daylight savings, and will include Germany, United States and some other countries of the European Union.
What is the concept behind Daylight Saving Time?
This works by the saying of Ben Franklin “Early to Bed and Early to Rise”, which inspired the computer scientist David Prerau, the author of the infamous book “Seize the Daylight: The Curious and Contentious Story of Daylight Saving Time.”
Daylight Saving time was initiated, surprisingly for the first time in Germany, after World War I, for a simple reason to reduce the money and coal spent on artificial lighting and diverts the resources to food resources and resurrecting the resultant destruction. This was soon adopted by other countries that were both friends and foes during the war. This system became mandatory in the United States during the time of World War II and later became an optional for US states. Later during the period of energy crisis, again the scheme was implemented, and from 2005 following the enactment of Energy Policy Act of 2005, this month long extension of daylight saving time was started ever since 2007 and is followed until today.
Why is this, a bane?
A few problems have been observed in the regions of the countries where this system of daylight savings has been observed. The problem is simple, as most of them who are online connected to the server that is set to automatically switch back and forth as per the daylight time saving requirements, will face no problem, and can manage their time and schedules with no fail and turn their clock. This clock confusion arises to the rest of the not so tech savvy or the resource-deprived population, who fail to reset their clocks, will find themselves an hour early or late.
Why is this, a boon?
The main aim of this scheme is to reduce the use of energy and save energy, making life more eco-friendly. This has been found in many places, for example, during Sydney Olympics 2000, that the evening energy gain did not compensate the morning energy use in this region of the world. Similarly, in the hotter regions, the use of air-conditioners in the extended hotter evenings increases the energy gain than the energy saved.
Ironically, there are still many reports, the recent being the one generated in the year 2008 by the US Department of Energy, ascertained that daylight saving time reduces nearly 0.03 percent of electricity consumption and 0.02 percent of energy consumption.
The Debate:
On the positive side, this extended hours seemed to have brought life back to outdoor activities like jogging, walking and visiting parks and enjoying picnics.
In contrast, the ill effects of this daylight saving time will involve a disturbance to the body circadian clocks that can lead to decreased productivity, quality of life, susceptibility to illness and increased tiredness, which otherwise, is better known as “social jet lag”.
While the debate will continue and will keep going on with the public, unless one of these two happens: wither daylight saving time consequences, both the pros and cons are well researched and is continued or discontinued based on concrete evidences and results thus generated. Alternatively, keeping in mind of the possibility of this being a great innovative initiative to save energy - more concrete and useful solutions and policies could be drafted, implemented by creating awareness to the public by putting to best practice to save the earth.
