Be Wise To Gain Citations Over Publications In High Impact Factor Journals

If you have a ground breaking discovery then you will undoubtedly land up publishing your paper in Nature and Science. Unfortunately, Nature and Science has also failed to drive citations that builds up your rapport as a researcher in the scientific community, in certain fields of biological sciences to my knowledge will include, agriculture, plant sciences and plant biology. This is when you will have to reconsider before submitting you paper for publication to a journal that will be more read by funding agencies and grant reviewers for your field of research.
Submitting To Top-Tier Journals As A Young Scientist:
As a young researcher, I was ambitious and felt that I should work harder and focused to get my publication into one of these top-tiered journals like Nature and Science. However, I am thinking of reconsidering my opinion after getting to read this article, and am trying to be more pragmatic.
I have started to understand that getting one done will take time, and maybe if someone could get to read what happened in the lab where the iconic finding of the molecular structure of DNA took place, will realize the years of hard work and input required to get one succinct paper written and published in those journals. However, in order to achieve this, I will need money and so all my preliminary and initial work done could be published in one of those journals that many of the grant reviewers will be reading. This will make them turn their heads to my grant application on seeing my name. I learnt that I am branded by the brand of the journal that the grant reviewers read.
Tips To Increase Your Citation Numbers:
Well, having relieved of the pressure by becoming aware that getting a paper published merely on one of the top-tiered journals is not suffice to get a higher citation index. On reading the linked article, I have highlighted a few tips and tricks for increasing you citation index below:
1. Review articles are well established citation magnets. One well researched, focused and clearly written review article could bring in more number of citations in your field of research.
2. A newly developed and established technique could also drive in more number of citations increasing your personal citation index.
3. Getting your paper published in a lesser prestigious journal is likely to increase your research productivity and will bring in more number of publications.
4. Yet another trick in getting your grant proposal successful is to get your research manuscript published in one of those journals that the grant reviewers or some of the researchers working in the funding agencies have got their research manuscripts published. This means there are very many chances that grant panel members would have come across your publications and the probability of you being successful with your grant application will be high.
5. Many a times, scientists who write letters of recommendations will be based on your publications in lesser prestigious journals than in top-tier journals like Cell, Nature or Science. These are the works that you can discuss with seniors scientists whom you will be getting introduced to in one or the other scientific meetings.
On the whole, knowing the target audience is much more important in getting a higher citation index than is more important in getting your paper published in a journal of high impact factor.
My final word on this article is: THE DEBATE STILL CONTINUES......
