Australians are the world's worst polluters

November 15th 2007 05:45
Power Station

A worldwide study by the Carbon Monitoring for Action (Carma) ranks Australia the world's worst polluters per capita, producing five times as much carbon from generating power as China.

Carma is a product of the Confronting Climate Change Initiative, an independent think-tank at the Centre for Global Development that examines 50,000 power stations across the world.

The US is ranked second with eight tonnes of carbon per head while also producing the most carbon in total, followed by China.

Australian power stations were found to be the least efficient on a per capita basis (emissions of 10 tonnes compared with the US's 8.2 tonnes) with New South Wales home to the two largest CO2 emitting power stations at Muswellbrook, and Eraring near Lake Macquarie with a combined total of 18.32 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year!

Eraring Power Station: One of the largest CO2 emitting power stations in the world.

To put things into perspective, China's power sector pumps 2.4 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually - the second highest total amount of the gas - but its emissions are only one fifth of Australia's when measured on a per capita basis.

The study also reveals that Australia ranks seventh in terms of total CO2 emission from power stations, ahead of Italy, Britain, France and South Korea.

The extent of this study effectively shows that developed countries such as the US, Australia, Italy, UK and France are producing more carbon dioxide per head than emerging economies.

Most of our power is coal based - we don't use nuclear power like most other developed nations.

In th elong run we should stop, but nuclear power doesn't feel like a safe alternative.

Correct.

Perhaps it's about time we used a more environmentally friendly source of power then?

I think we need to one up the rest of the world and really use soemthing thats environmentally friendly and innovative.

We should try investing in hydrgen and solar power, we have lots of sun and water (ocean) and I really think that theres a lot of untapped potential in such areas.
