Artificial rabbit penis successful
May 25th 2006 14:14
Forget viagra, cialis, or whatever else those emails try to sell you. From the very research team that brought you bioengineered bladders comes a "landmark development" in artificial organs - an "artificial penis" that allows rabbits with damaged penises to successfully mate.
The research team, from Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA, constructed a collagen matrix from smooth muscle and blood vessel cells from rabbit penises, which formed a basis for tissue regeneration.
"The technique may also help people with congenital penile abnormalities or those who have lost part of the organ to cancer," reports the New Scientist.
